With excellent soils, Lincolnshire is the UK’s largest producer of wheat, potatoes and other vegetables. Poultry and pigs are also of significance. We enjoy amazing locally produced food, home grown, from markets and from independent shops.

Self catering holidays in Lincolnshire are an excellent way to sample Lincolnshire specialities either in cafés, restaurants and pubs, or from the shops and markets, prepared in our fully equipped self catering apartments.

At Brackenborough Hall we provide our guests with seasonal fruit and vegetables from our garden free of charge. There may be rhubarb in the spring, courgettes and runner beans in the summer, and apples and damsons in the autumn. Eggs from the farm will usually be on sale, as well as local honey, Piper’s Crisps*† and Skidbrooke Apple Juice*†.

Specialities to take home

Try the different varieties of Lincolnshire plum bread on sale in Louth and bring some home as presents. Or pick up a sack of potatoes, net of onions, or bag of carrots from farmers shops. Then there are the famous Lincolnshire sausages* we buy from Laking’s butchers*† but you can buy from any of the butchers, as well as stuffed chine, haslet, pork/game pies and Lincoln Red beef. Cote Hill Blue Cheese*† is Flora’s favourite, and Poacher cheese*† is excellent with Myers’ plum bread*† in the traditional Lincolnshire way.

Then there is Belleau smoked fish*†, local honey, Piper’s Crisps*†, Scrubbys Vegetable Crisps, Ownsworth’s Rapeseed Oil, and of course Fulstow beer (Fugelestou Ales)*, Bateman’s Beer*†, and Skidbrooke cider*†. And then there is chocolate… at Louth’s Little Chocolatier or the excellent Spire Chocolates*†, and old fashioned sweetshops Gobstopper or Sweet Memories in Louth.

Pubs, cafés and restaurants

Pubs

Louth area pubs compete for the CAMRA award for best real ale – try the Gas Lamp*† in Louth where Fulstow beer* is brewed, or the Railway Tavern in Aby. For good pub grub there is the Royal Oak in Little Cawthorpe (‘the Splash’)*† where children and dogs are welcome too, the Waggon & Horses at South Reston which welcomes families, or Ye Olde Whyte Swanne in Louth (telephone 01507 201373) where seafood is a speciality.

The popular Wheatsheaf pub in Louth
The Wheatsheaf pub in Louth – popular with locals

The Wheatsheaf is popular with locals with its log fires and low beams, and the Mason’s Arms in the centre of Louth offers guest beers and lunchtime food. You could also try the Woolpack in Louth (dogs and children welcome), the King’s Head at Theddlethorpe, the New Plough at Covenham, the Queen’s Head at Legbourne, and the Stag’s Head at Burwell. Take a drive in the Wolds to the Bluebell Inn at Belchford for an excellent meal. For Louth’s nightlife try Cobbles Bar off New Street, Samuel’s Nightclub (in the cellars), or one of the many pubs.

Dog Friendly pubs

If you are looking for somewhere to eat where you can bring your dog, the Woolpack, the Wheatsheaf and the Masons Arms in Louth, The Splash*† at Little Cawthorpe and the Waggon & Horses at South Reston will welcome you, and the Gas Lamp*† is where the locals bring their dogs when enjoying the local beer and cider.

Cafés

Sample excellent Lincolnshire meals and snacks at Perkins’ Pantry*† and Larders*, or homemade cakes and scones at Millie Mae’s or Chuzzlewitz in Louth, or treat yourself to a break when exploring Lincolnshire’s quiet roads, at Kenwick Farmhouse Nursery and Tea Rooms*†, Willingham Fayre, Sunnyside Up Farm Shop and Tea Room, Jossals of Market Rasen*†, Hemswell Court*† when shopping for antiques, or Appleby’s Ices at Conisholme. Pause on your trip to Lincoln in the coffee shop in the cathedral.

Restaurants

Lincolnshire has a wide choice of restaurants and many are only a short taxi ride from Brackenborough. For a special occasion, book the taster menu at the Priory*† – at least 7 courses! The thatched Mill House Restaurant* in Covenham is popular for quality bar meals, as is the Brackenborough Hotel* and Kenwick Hotel.

Louth has a choice of Indian restaurants – the Helal is in one of the oldest buildings in Louth, or for a modern setting try Bollywood Fusion. The Tai Pan serves excellent Chinese food where we like sitting at the round table in the window, and Thai Silk where you can sit and enjoy the view of Louth spire is worth visiting.

You will get a warm welcome at Istanbul* where the guvech is delicious, and Marrakesh offers Moroccan cuisine. Via Italia, Smokey Joe’s and Mr Chips are great for families.

For special offers, especially midweek, ask about the Greyhound, Ye Olde Whyte Swanne or Mill House* midweek menus, Kenwick steak night, The Splash*† fish night or banquet night (Wednesday) at the Helal. Many pubs offer a traditional Sunday Roast at competitive prices, too.

Takeaways

Louth offers many types of takeaway – Chinese, Indian, Thai, Turkish, Italian and a choice of Fish & Chips – fish from Grimsby and Lincolnshire potatoes. At Brackenborough Hall Coach House we keep a supply of menus so you can order in advance – and some may bring out your order by taxi! We suggest: Seven* (closest to us), Parkinson’s Fish & Chips*, Mr Chips, Helal, Bollywood Fusion, Tai Pan, Istanbul*, Thai silk, Via Italia, Marrakesh or the New Plough at Covenham.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten free food in Louth

Vegetarian food is offered in most Louth area restaurants and cafés. Many Louth pubs and restaurants offer gluten free options too, as do the markets and shops. The Louth Wholefood Co-op sells speciality foods including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and organic. Seven*, Helal, and The Splash*† have good vegetarian options.

Families

The Splash*† and the Waggon & Horses have children’s menus, highchairs and a large garden to play in. Children enjoy the burgers at Smokey Joe’s and pizzas at Via Italia or traditional fish and chips at Mr Chips.

Catering

Brackenborough is an excellent place for a wedding or party. Laking’s*† will deliver an excellent cold buffet of Lincolnshire sausages, meats, pies, quiches, cheeses etc. Hot meals can be served by Brackenborough Hotel or Alvingham Caterers and hog roasts are popular – the saddleback pork is highly recommended from Oak Tree Pigs*†. For desert, consider hiring a local ice cream van, such as Farmer Brown’s.
